Lanzarote is physically and emotionally comforting.
The extraordinary climate is combined with a unique, sustainable gastronomy, linked to the territory, rich in products and a creator of the landscape. The result could not be more gratifying, and Lanzarote has the gift of that vigorous Altlántico which provides it with fresh and tasty fish and seafood.
From its countryside sprout true gastronomic gems, such as its potatoes or sweet potatoes; from its livestock, masterful cheeses, awarded at international level; and from its unique landscape, wines made from a unique grape variant in the world, the Malvasía Volcánica.
In addition to this, there is a growing offer of hotels where local gastronomy of proximity and quality are the fundamental attributes of its tourist offer; with gastronomic proposals that value sustainability, the territory and the landscape.
The kitchen of wits: with fire and water
Fifteen million years linked to the volcano and the Atlantic Ocean have turned the products of this land into small works of art. Lanzarote is the island of the jable, the ash and the humidity of the trade winds. Its gastronomy is the product of a profound ecological knowledge and an extremely singular nature.
In this territory, barely 100 kilometres from Africa, the traditional crops of potatoes, sweet potatoes, onions and grain are nourished by the dew and the mist. They also thrive on the treasure that unusually falls from the sky and is stored in cisterns, gullies and ancient hydraulic engineering systems.
Women, men, land and sea have been cultivated here through observation, ingenuity and vigour. This is the only way to produce the potato of Los Valles, the sweet potato of the jable, the unprecedented wine of La Geria, the shrimp of La Santa, the goat cheese, the salt cooked in pools of sea and sun, the wreckfish, the hake of La Graciosa….
To protect and disseminate this cultural heritage – and the producers and artisans who sustain it – in 2010 Saborea Lanzarote was born, a seal of quality endorsed by the Canary Islands Government’s Institute of Agri-Food Quality.
These local products, raised using sustainable techniques, are the protagonists of the biggest gastronomic event in the Canary Islands every year, the Saborea Lanzarote Food and Wine Festival (November, Villa de Teguise), the Cheese and Goat Fair (March, Playa Blanca) and the Lanzarote Wine Run Traditional Cuisine Festival (June, La Geria) and the Tapa Fair (September, Puerto del Carmen).
The main mission of Saborea Lanzarote is to promote and position Lanzarote as a food and wine tourism destination, based on the authentic values and attributes of the island, our producers, the quality of the products, the know-how and creativity of our chefs, and the dynamism of our tourism sector.
In this context, the Saborea Lanzarote Guarantee Brand has been created as a seal of quality, sponsored by the first institution of the island and endorsed by the Government of the Canary Islands, through the Institute of Agri-Food Quality, with the intention of highlighting the original and quality products of the island of Lanzarote. The guarantee brand is the umbrella that reflects the good work of our producers and guarantees the values of Lanzarote’s agriculture and agro-industry to the consumer.
