Today, August 12, 2026, Spain is witnessing something that hasn’t happened since 1905: a total solar eclipse visible from the Iberian Peninsula. The Moon’s shadow will sweep across the country from northwest to southeast at sunset, and for one or two minutes, day will turn into night along a band nearly 300 kilometers wide.
This is not a minor event. It is the first total solar eclipse over Spanish soil in more than a century, and the next one won’t happen again until 2053.
What makes it more interesting is that the path of totality happens to cross 14 of the destinations that make up the Saborea España network. While the sun disappears for a minute, the tables in these places don’t stop.
The 14 destinations that will see the sun go dark
A Coruña. You’re about to see something that won’t happen again in your lifetime, so grab a table with an Atlantic view and order fresh market seafood, giant cockles included.
Lugo. Before the sky goes dark in broad daylight, try Galician-style octopus and empanada, and finish with a bit of San Simón cheese as the sun goes down.
Oviedo. If you’re going to tell this story for the rest of your life, make sure a fabada and a proper poured cider are part of it.
León. Before the sky switches off, order cured cecina and stretch out the meal with a vermouth.
Burgos. Today you’re living something that hasn’t happened here in over a century, celebrate it with morcilla de Burgos and its cheese.
Valladolid. You won’t often see day turn into night, so sit down for roast suckling lamb and some offal-style tapas while it happens.
Segovia. Before you look up at the sky, look at your plate: order roast suckling pig, the most classic totality in Spain.
Logroño. If the sky is going dark for a minute, make sure Calle Laurel never does, go for pintxos with a young Rioja in hand.
Zaragoza. A day like this only comes once, order ternasco de Aragón and keep both memories.
Cambrils. Today is a day you’ll remember for the rest of your life, make the most of it with market fish and a proper seafood rice facing the Mediterranean.
Vinaròs. Before the sun disappears, try the local prawns, you won’t often get a better excuse.
Castellón. Find a clear horizon to watch the eclipse and pair it with arroz a banda, both the view and the dish deserve it.
Cullera and Gandia. Rice from the Ribera del Xúquer gets its own moment in the spotlight today, order one and share it as the sky darkens.
