The Cigales wine region supplied wine to Valladolid without paying taxes when the city had no wine. That’s why municipalities such as Fuensaldaña, Mucientes and Cigales had a direct relationship with the city. The traditional wineries of these municipalities have always been directly linked to Valladolid, and at the Wine Museum, you can learn all about this rich culture.
At the same time, wine and cheese are closely related, due in part to their gastronomic harmony when paired together, but also to the importance of livestock in the area, which has a large number of livestock trails. Among them are La Cañada Real Burgalesa, which connects Valladolid to the Cigales Wine Route. The points of interest along this route are as follows:
Bodegas Frutos Villar
Quesería Artesanal de Mucientes
Bodega-Wine Cellar Interpretation Centre (Wine Museum)
Description: In 1960, Grupo Frutos Villar opened a winery in Cigales, establishing its headquarters in this town. The current facilities are the result of a thorough refurbishment and expansion carried out in 2000-01: the old wine production building was completely renovated with stainless steel tanks, cold and filtering equipment, presses, etc., and a new barrel ageing building was constructed. The tour visits the wine production building and the old underground part of the winery, made up of a group of tunnels connecting various pre-existing wine cellars you can explore along with the rest of the winery, where you’ll then have the chance to taste some wine.

Description: Artisanal cheese shop run by Alfredo González and Isabel Edesa. Alfredo is in charge of the livestock. The most important thing is to feed the livestock an excellent diet, as the quality of the final product depends on it. Here, like in many things in life, quality is more important than quantity. Products are also sold outside of the factory: there’s nobody better than Alfredo to take them to the points of sale that trust in their cheese shop. Isabel is in charge of the factory. This is where the livestock’s milk is transformed into cheese, yogurt and milk curd. The secret: unique raw material, flawless conditions and a meticulous production process. The result is cheese that truly tastes like cheese. The visit consists of a tour of the facilities followed by a cheese tasting.
