“El corazón de la isla” route (The Heart of the Island) Jable and Malvasia volcánica

Delve into the centre of Lanzarote and be surprised by authentic gastronomic gems that are born in a seemingly inhospitable territory: Sweet potatoes, malvasia wines and artisan cheeses.

The central part of the island of Lanzarote is characterised by two very different and truly surprising landscapes. On the one hand, you will find La Geria, which is the largest wine-growing area on the island and where vines are cultivated in a way that is unique in the world, the result of the ingenuity of the island’s farmers who have managed to produce excellent volcanic malvasia wines while creating a unique landscape. And on the other hand, there is a corridor invaded by white sand (jable) which is transported from the Sahara and deposited on the slopes of our mountains, generating a rich and peculiar ecosystem of cultivation very appropriate for tubers such as sweet potatoes, potatoes, a wide variety of grains, as well as other vegetables. Along this interesting route, you will discover not only an unusual landscape full of contrasts but also a carefully selected gastronomic offer based on farms, cheese dairies, restaurants and, of course, some of the most emblematic wineries on the island.

Today, it has undergone a great deal of modernisation: the vines have been renovated, investment is being made in technology, and it has been awarded the Designation of Origin status, all of which guarantees meticulous winemaking and ageing, governed by regulations that are demanding for today’s wineries. Work is being done on all fronts to produce quality wines and to increase competitiveness and strengthen the sector.

El Grifo, the veteran island winery, was the first to produce a sparkling wine from Malvasia. In 1986 a batch of Semiseco bottles underwent a second accidental fermentation in the bottle, but the corks did not pop, thus realizing the aptitude of the volcanic malvasia for making sparkling wine. It is located in the area of Juan Bello, in the municipality of San Bartolomé, next to a farmhouse of the time, in a typical area of grape growing on the island of Lanzarote, surrounded by other farmhouses that maintain the wineries and cellars of yesteryear, and which were responsible for processing all the grapes from the different farms in the area.
