GRAN CANARIA, THE RUM ROUTE

The Canary Islands in general, and Gran Canaria in particular, was a bridge for the development and expansion of the cultivation of the raw material for rum: sugar cane. After the Conquest, sugar cane, along with trade, was the main source of wealth on the islands: during the first quarter of the 16th century, there were 25 sugar mills, also known as “trapiches”. From the north to the south of the island, even in the present-day capital, the landscape was littered with sugar cane fields. In addition to exporting sugar, much of the sugar cane was used for the rum industry. Although only the Arehucas mill is still in operation today, albeit at full capacity, the island’s rum spirit is kept alive through its factories, plantations and restaurants, where you’ll never be short of a glass of good rum.

  • Description: This chapel, whose origins date back to the tower-fortress erected during the conquest of the island in 1481 under the command of Captain Alonso Fernández de Lugo, was ordered to be built by the Genoese merchant Antón Cerezo. Today, the chapel is, architecturally speaking, a compendium of different styles with simple lines that recall the history of a conquest, with the port of Las Nieves and the imposing Tamadaba Massif in the background. The chapel, and the Flemish triptych that rests in it, are the latent memory of a commercial relationship that arose between Flanders and the Canary Islands linked to sugar cane and its transformation. The exploitation of sugar mills on the island of Gran Canaria made the Genoese merchant Antonio Cerezo very rich, which led him to commission the triptych from the famous painter between 1525 and 1531. The original triptych is currently being restored but a replica can be seen in the place occupied by the original.Recommendations: Don’t miss the 16th century Flemish triptych by Joos Van Cleve, which is of great artistic value.
