  • Description: To discover this town and its long fishing tradition, we will start our tour at the Port of Vinaròs, one of the most important ports in the entire Mediterranean from the 16th to 19th centuries. The port was the main link between Europe and America thanks to imports and exports of wine, salt, flour, and cacao among other products, which made Vinaròs one of the era’s most important sea trade cities. Currently the port is located in the same spot guarded by the parallel Poniente dock and the transversal Levante dock. The port boasts an extensive fishing fleet with a tradition dating back centuries. Thanks to the low saline coastal waters, the vicinity to the mouth of the Ebro River and the pleasant temperatures all year long, high-quality fish, crustaceans and molluscs grow in the sea in Vinaròs, in particular the world famous Vinaròs king prawn. Famous for its succulent meat and size (which can reach up to 20 cm), the Vinaròs prawn is the city’s most prized culinary treasure. The National King Prawn Cooking Contest has been held each year since 1964 and it always attracts the best chefs nationwide.

  • Description: Our third stop will be the Central Market, located in Plaça de Sant Agustí in the city’s old town. Its origins date back to the mid-19th century when the Plaça de Sant Agustí hosted several permanent stalls selling vegetables, legumes and fruits. In 1899, the plaza featured more than 200 stands with the main local products, with an additional 16 travelling stands every Saturday (truly a sight to see!). A few years later, in 1928, the current market was built on the site of the old Saint Elmo Convent (home of the Augustine monks).

Currently the plaza and the market are the best site to spend the morning watching people go about their daily lives and to purchase the best local products. So, what better way than to enjoy a home-made vermouth (a bicicleta) and prawn tapas made from the day’s catch? Inside the market, the bar “Lo Típic” will prepare whatever you just purchased right then and there so that you can enjoy it peacefully with a vermouth in hand. Can you think of anything more authentic?

Once a month you can also enjoy local product presentations known as Tast del Territori, within the Espai Gastronòmic del Mercat, located inside the market.
