  • Description: A unique Japanese experience in Europe. Kiro Sushi opened in October 2015. Its name is a Japanese word with multiple meanings. On the one hand, it means the way back, somewhat symbollic of the life of chef Félix Jiménez, a native of Alfaro who has returned to us. This word also has to do with light: the light that shines thanks to the first Michelin star for the cuisine of Logroño, which it won in the 2018 edition. The incomparable secret of Félix Jiménez is that he has an incredible way of introducing himself into traditional Japanese cuisine; he practises it with true taste, with the utmost delectation, in a masterly manner and with total respect for the arts of a classic and little-known cuisine in which he has become a true master. That way of touching, caressing and cutting the fish, of getting the perfect little balls of rice or the beauty of the handmade bowls by the potter Toño Naharro (which accompany all his creations) can transport the customer to a kind of trance. Kiro is a unique experience in Europe, with fans coming from all over the world to this restaurant in Logroño. A wooden bar and ten seats around it for those who enjoy a unique experience. This layout and an atmosphere of Asian harmony and tranquillity, the quality of the product and a preparation that takes care of the smallest detail are the keys to Kiro’s sushi. 16 nigiris on a single tasting menu.

  • Description: A revelation of the best modern cuisine. Óscar Torres is the chef at La Chispa Adecuada, one of the most surprising restaurants in the new cuisine of Logroño. A chef with a late vocation who was able to reinvent himself and bring his passion for creative, fun cuisine, modest and with great respect for good produce, to his restaurant. Winner of the 18th Pinchos Competition of La Rioja for the tapa ‘Bernabé’, made with wonton wrappers, green pepper, spring onion, old-fashioned mustard, wine and vinegar spheres, yellow chilli, kimchi and rainbow trout. A pincho that is a tribute to Lorenzo Cañas, the essential master and creator of contemporary Rioja cuisine. Óscar’s cuisine places part of its emphasis on presentation, flavour and the idea of sharing, with the charcoal grill as one of the central elements in his kitchen. This is a small gastrobar serving lunch and dinner, offering seasonal produce and dishes that combine tradition with more contemporary cuisine. The chef, a fan of the band Los Héroes del Silencio (hence the name of the restaurant) explains that he prepares traditional recipes, seasoned with an international twist, the result of his fondness for travelling and experiencing other cuisines. We have learned to give seasonal products a more universal vision. He adds spicy touches, dressings, chocolates and sauces to top quality ingredients to surprise diners. La Chispa Adecuada also has an extensive but fun wine list.

  • Description: Ice creams about people, landscapes and flavours. Heladería Della Sera is a small ice cream paradise located in the heart of Logroño. A window of flavour and creativity offering the ice creams made personally at Obrador Grate by Fernando Sáenz Duarte and Angelines González. Della Sera is an ice cream parlour where the most important thing is the flavour of the creations, impregnated with references to our land. Its herb garden, the Rioja culture and the local pastries are the main flavours of an offer designed to be enjoyed. Fernando’s ice creams relate totally and absolutely to the radically natural environment from which they come: “The key is the use of authentic ingredients. Ice creams cannot be made on a production line, we have to understand them and make them with care to enjoy them, to feel them and we also have to love them in order to enjoy them to the full.” Its catalogue of ice creams includes ingredients like white wine lees, bunches of grapes left over after the wine harvest, fig leaves… In other words, it gives value to products that are often discarded: “We try to give meaning to everything we do, a meaning that transmits emotions and sensations linked to the land, its landscapes and its people.” Aromas are the door to memories, Fernando has written in his workshop, not as a propaganda exercise but as the essence of his life and culinary project.

  • Description: Mexico and La Rioja join hands in Ajo Negro. Ajo Negro is one of the most surprising restaurants in the new Rioja cuisine. It is the project of Mariana Sánchez and Gonzalo Baquedano. A Mexican woman and a man from Logroño who met while working in Barcelona, at Jordi Cruz’s restaurant Abac, and who have blended their cultures in Ajo Negro, with an à la carte menu, a tasting menu and a short fixed-price dinner menu. Ajo Negro is a fun, dynamic restaurant, based on the concept of tapas and raciones, with a very open cuisine, in which the menu is based on strong flavours to which the chefs apply their personal touch: “We want to get a smile and give a different experience in our restaurant,” explains Mariana. It is a space designed for sharing dishes at the centre of the table in an informal atmosphere.  Some examples of the dishes found in Ajo Negro: Peas, wild mushrooms, Iberico pork jowl and truffled oil, and grilled beef Arrachera with beetroot in textures. Ajo Negro is one of the greatest examples of the growth and diversity of the new cuisine of Logroño.

  • Description: Creator of an unprecedented space in Logroño. Álex García is one of the best examples of the new generation of chefs from Logroño. He is also a young entrepreneur who, after training in restaurants such as Asador Egües, Akelarre and Arzak, launched a new culinary model in the city in 2010 with the opening of UMM (Food and Drink). A meal to share in a restaurant that is also a bar, with a central table with high chairs at the centre of the gathering place. Throughout the day, UMM transforms itself: breakfasts, lunches, lunches, afternoon drinks… Until dinner comes, which is the peak of the day. UMM’s cuisine is very faithful to a clear line of local produce, although with certain nods to other countries and culinary cultures. This is how Álex defines the culinary concept that makes him happiest: “I am convinced that the dishes I make have some direct relationship with my childhood experiences and somewhere in them appear the roots, the details of my mother and my grandmother.” As essential ingredients in his cuisine, seasonal vegetables from La Rioja stand out, without renouncing other spaces where the product and the territory go hand in hand. Álex emphasises the use of seasonal, high quality raw materials and, to do so, he is capable of travelling halfway across Spain to find a supplier that makes him happy and gives his customers the maximum pleasure. In this place it is always a good idea to try the pincho of the week (it rotates and always catches the eye) and then dive into the dishes. Highlights include the Russian salad with Joselito ham, beef carpaccio with Parmesan, seafood risotto with prawns and slice of jowl, and charcoal grilled octopus.
