Artisans of flavour. Vineyards and Dairies

Apart from the sea, between vineyards and green pastures, a culinary experience awaits where you can enjoy another facet of the lands surrounding vinaròs.

Tradition and culture: these two words define the local cuisine of Vinaròs and its surroundings. Thanks to the local weather and geography this town was once an economic powerhouse, with foreign trade as one of its main sources of wealth. Its abundant high-quality vineyards became one of the main wine exporters to countries such as France and Italy. After the scourge of phylloxera came through, the vast majority of vineyards in the area were lost. However, today Vinaròs keeps pursuing its passion for grape growing and wine culture, and on this tour you will have the opportunity to get to know some of the artisans dedicated to this great calling. What could go better with wine tasting than a selection of artisan cheese? Come with us to discover the exciting stories and incredible flavours hidden inside our handmade culinary products, crafted with the utmost attention and care.

  • Description: The flavour of a good wine depends on the variety of grape, the harvest and the production, creation, storage and maceration process. This last part is where Abelardo Ripoll and his artisan cooper work come into play. It all started one day in 1997, when he and his father were dusting off an old wooden cask with work tools. Abelardo was fascinated with the idea of working by hand on the barrels following the traditional techniques that his father had used years before, so he set about putting his hands to work with a great deal of perseverance and effort. After a lot of back and forth searching for new contacts and wood, iron and rivet suppliers, he finally made his own workshop, thus founding the Wine and Cooperage Interpretation Centre, which is now currently the only artisan cooperage in the entire Valencian Community. Located in Sant Jordi (a few minutes from Vinaròs), their workshop will make you feel like you’re in a fantasy film: a tree house, a six-metre tall, 60,000 litre capacity vat turned into a small bedroom, vineyards and lush trees form part of this magical setting. In this space, Abelardo will show us live how he works with American oak using only the flames, water and a lathe. After finishing the visit we can enjoy a tasting session with local wines and products from the land. This unique visit will certainly leave your senses tingling.

  • Description: Our third stop will be the Central Market, located in Plaça de Sant Agustí in the city’s old town. Its origins date back to the mid-19th century when the Plaça de Sant Agustí hosted several permanent stalls selling vegetables, legumes and fruits. In 1899, the plaza featured more than 200 stands with the main local products, with an additional 16 travelling stands every Saturday (truly a sight to see!). A few years later, in 1928, the current market was built on the site of the old Saint Elmo Convent (home of the Augustine monks).

Currently the plaza and the market are the best site to spend the morning watching people go about their daily lives and to purchase the best local products. So, what better way than to enjoy a home-made vermouth (a bicicleta) and prawn tapas made from the day’s catch? Inside the market, the bar “Lo Típic” will prepare whatever you just purchased right then and there so that you can enjoy it peacefully with a vermouth in hand. Can you think of anything more authentic?

Once a month you can also enjoy local product presentations known as Tast del Territori, within the Espai Gastronòmic del Mercat, located inside the market.
