La Calle San Juan

Calle San Juan is synonymous with good times and good eating, fine wines, pinchos (snacks on bread), tapas, and raciones (larger dishes), modern cuisine, avant-garde touches, but tradition too. Ham and salmon, pork cheeks and brandade, gildas and morritos. All this and much more in a delightful walk that can be accessed in three places: Muro del Carmen, Portales where it crosses to Travesía, and Marqués de Vallejo, not forgetting the entrance that gives access to Calle San Juan from Calle el Cristo. In other words, a real checkerboard defining a culinary spectrum that is not confined to a single street and that shapes the San Juan Zone, a place to dream, enjoy, eat, drink and live.

  • Description: Taste and flavour of time. Tastavín is one of the benchmark tapas bars in Logroño for the quality of its pinchos and for the very concept of the establishment, which worships the product and the service of wines, with a blackboard on the wall behind the counter where customers have the opportunity to enjoy a large number of wines (from the DOC Rioja and other designations of origin) served by the glass. At the bar is Anca Teodorescu and in the kitchen Pedro Cárcamo, who have given the restaurant a strong personality with a collection of pinchos with the Riojan product par excellence, vegetables, at the centre; in which a very subtle technique goes hand in hand with a perfect clarity of flavours and aromas. Tastavín has been recommended by the Michelin Guide since its 2015 edition, in the tapas bar category. It seats 20 at high tables. Some of the marvels that Pedro Cárcamo prepares are cod in tempura, marinated salmon, beef cheeks in sauce, sirloin steak and the tuna tataki which has made him so famous for its original presentation. Other classics are the artichoke sachet with Iberian ham, a pastry with oxtail stewed with fig jam, not forgetting the truffled Cameros cream cheese with cherry tomato, basil, smoked anchovy and herring roe. In any case, they change the pinchos a lot and you can always ask Anca at the bar for the latest novelties from the kitchen and her imagination.

  • Description: Excellent wines and modernist pinchos. An extensive wine list and excellent pinchos (tapas) are proof of the constant work that over the last few years has made this place an essential part of any route through the cuisine of Logroño. The kobe tapa and the squid sandwich were his first two bombshells, two simply extraordinary pinchos that now rub shoulders with new additions such as the Thai-style sirloin steak, the Chipiplancton or the salmon. Alberto Rodríguez, the man in charge of the restaurant, knows that his cuisine is as enthusiastic as it is creative, as original as it is delicious and as colourful as it is intrepid. “We are looking for a complete service and we are committed to wines with a high turnover and plenty of new, quirky things”, emphasises Alberto, who has made a great effort to take the utmost care of his service to close the circle of quality of this benchmark establishment.

  • Description: A memorable omelette. In the Travesía de la calle San Juan, the entrance that leads directly to Portales and the Concatedral de la Redonda, sits one of Logroño’s bars par excellence: La Travesía, where Chus Hervías and Jacqueline García reign supreme. Twenty-five years ago they decided to build a tiny establishment with a long bar, an almost toy-like kitchen and a memorable omelette pincho that has won fans such as the actor Juan Echanove and Ferrán Adrià himself, who highlighted the unbeatable flavour of an omelette that has no secrets but is simply spectacular because it is perfect in taste, texture and seasoning. A small place, offering omelette with or without spicy sauce, in portions or whole to take away. A wonderful idea to pair with a Rioja in any circumstance or season of the year.

  • Description: Above average. To enter Dani Bueno’s Bueno Bueno bar is to realise immediately that there is no redundancy in the alliteration of positive adjectives. Everything tastes excellent in this restaurant, which in just a few years has built up a loyal clientele thanks to the flavour of its small works of art, among which the molletes de jamón are outstanding, excellent because of the raw material from Los Pedroches and the EVOO, and its unique empanadillas (pasties), simple, delicate and delicious. Not forgetting the octopus, spherical potato omelettes and smoked sardines. But Dani is also committed to wine, from here and there; with careful service, he pampers his customers with a friendly and unassuming attitude, and he tries to ensure that “everything is as tasty as possible, that it is simple and that people leave my house happy”.

Bar García

  • Description: The historical essence of Calle San Juan. You are not from Logroño if you have never been seduced by the ham and Manchego cheese “slipper” at Bar García, one of the venerable establishments in Calle San Juan, attested by its more than fifty years of experience with its stupendous specialities, especially the toast with ham, cheese, tomato, cecina de León, cabrales cheese, etc., as well as its spectacular anchovies with green pepper, mayonnaise with ham or the irresistible portions of bacon. Bar García is synonymous with authenticity, with the feeling of life in a bar that began half a century ago when Daniel and Mónica, parents of the current owners, transformed the old bar El Regio into one of the most attractive bars in La Rioja.
