Feel the heartbeat of the Ancient Olive Trees: secrets and flavours. The greatest concentration of ancient olive trees can be found in the Sénia and around Vinaròs. True natural monuments with centuries upon centuries of history, including the famous Farga del Pou del Mas olive tree, which measures precisely 8 metres in perimeter. Let yourself be swept away by their lush, majestic branches while you discover the fascinating and exciting stories that they have to tell you. Ester, our guide from Cultural Routes, will lead you on this journey where you can discover all that this reserve keeps hidden. After getting to know about these majestic olive trees, now it’s time to enjoy their extra virgin olive oil, that famed treasure that has passed down through history and has marked Mediterranean culture from the time of the Phoenicians, yet remains ever present in our cuisine today.

To do so we’ll meet Alex, Andrés and Sergio, the expert producers from Olis Cuquello, the family-owned company dedicated to working and tending the lands to produce these excellent oils. With many years of experience, they skilfully dedicate their expertise to creating the 5 single varieties of olive oil including: Cuquello 100, Farga 100, Sevillenc 100, Villalonga 100, and Cantera 100 each one with different properties, nuances, flavours and textures. Together we will discover all the details of the process of making this famous liquid gold while tasting three of the oldest local varieties.

Since we know that you can’t resist its bewitching flavour, our guide will give you a bottle of exquisite Farga oil, an ancient local variety introduced by the Romans, extracted from ancient olive trees with massive diameters over 10 metres and branches unfurling out to cover more than 30 square metres of surface area.

    • Main offers:
    • Guided visit to the ancient olive trees

Respect for the environment, direct contact between producer and consumer, protection of the natural heritage of the ancient trees and working hard to produce a variety of high-quality extra virgin olive oil are the cornerstones of Olis Cuquello’s values. Olis Cuquello is committed to producing the local Cuquello, Farga, Sevillenc and Canetera varieties. The Cuquello variety is exclusive to La Jana, while the others are more widespread across the county. The company has also introduced a variety that pertains to other Valencian counties, the Villalonga, always striving to find that balance between tradition and innovation. Together with Explora Maestrat, they’ll offer visits to the ancient olive trees of the Pou del Mas de la Jana farm located next to the Via Augusta. Occupying less than one hectare the farm is home to 21 varieties, including the Farga del Pou del Mas olive tree, nearly 8 metres in perimeter and the “de las Parejas” olive tree, which earned the AEMO prize for the best landmark olive tree in Spain in 2014. They also offer local oil tastings at a farm five minutes away by foot from the massive olive trees of Pou del Mas. This olive oil tasting aims to distinguish between the different flavours of three extra virgin olive oils, including the Cuquello variety, which is a local variety found only in La Jana.

On this idyllic natural reserve stands the historical Santuari de la Misericordia sanctuary, also known as Saint Sebastian’s sanctuary, which was built over different chronological periods, although the Hermitage located on the same site dates back to the 15th century. The same site featured the construction of stables and shelters to host pilgrims who journeyed to venerate the saint. This site has a lot of history to tell.
